Saturation and parton level Cronin effect: enhancement vs suppression of gluon production in p-A and A-A collisions

چکیده
We note that the phenomenon of perturbative saturation leads to transverse momentum broadening in the spectrum of partons produced in hadronic collisions. This broadening has a simple interpretation as parton level Cronin effect. The effect appears for systems in which saturation is generated by the ”tree level” GlauberMueller mechanism as well as for those where it results form the nonlinear QCD evolution to high energy. We discuss the relation of this phenomenon to the recent analysis by Kharzeev-Levin-McLerran of the momentum and centrality dependence of particle production in nucleus-nucleus collisions at RHIC.

Cronin effect and high–p⊥ suppression from the Color Glass Condensate
I give a pedagogical survey of the nuclear collective effects associated with gluon saturation and their impact on particle production in high–energy proton (or deuteron)–nucleus collisions at RHIC. At central rapidity, the theory predicts a Cronin peak due to independent multiple scattering off the valence quarks in the nucleus. At forward rapidities, the peak flattens out and disappears very ...

In contrast to the case for the nucleon, little is known about the distribution of gluons in nuclei, especially in the region of Björkenx < 0.01, where x is the fraction of the nucleon’s momentum carried by the parton. Studies of deuteron(proton)+nucleus collisions at large center of mass energy ( √ sNN=200 GeV) can provide constraints on the gluon density in heavy nuclei. In the perturbative Q...

Collisions between hadronic systems at relativistic energies provide a window on the small-x gluon distributions of fast moving nuclei. It has been predicted that gluon saturation effects will manifest themselves as a suppression in the transverse momentum (p t) distribution at a scale which is connected with the rapidity of the measured particles. Saturation effects are most evident at large (...
متن کاملForward Production in d+Au Collisions by Parton Recombination
Hadron production at forward rapidities in d+Au collisions is studied in the framework of parton recombination in the final state. Multiple scattering and gluon saturation in the initial state are not explicitly considered. The recombination of soft and shower partons is found to be important. The soft parton densities are determined by extrapolation from the parametrization fixed at η = 0 with...
متن کاملFrom DIS to proton-nucleus collisions in the Color Glass Condensate model
We show that particle production in proton-nucleus (pA) collisions in the Color Glass Condensate model can be related to Deep Inelastic Scattering of leptons on protons/nuclei (DIS). The common building block is the quark antiquark (or gluon-gluon) dipole cross section which is present in both DIS and pA processes. This correspondence in a sense generalizes the standard leading twist approach t...
